Where did the name MIMMO originate?
The word “mimmo” is a term of endearment in the Tuscan region of Italy and means “little one”.
Who can benefit from MIMMO Play Cafe?
We are all in all inclusive experience for the modern family who value a high quality experience during the first few years of life. We offer a range of parent and child classes and studio sessions designed for children from 0 to 5 years of age, as well as parent workshops and family events.
We look forward to building relationships with families who share our values and mission.
How are we different from other parent and child programs?
With a goal of helping families to create a beautiful life for both parent and child, we provide a place to call your “second home”.
Our classes are curated and individualized to meet the needs of each child, and our cafe experience provides an opportunity to socialize and learn and grow together.
We are guided by a rich philosophy that focuses on the whole child. Our atelier is a dynamic environment, which as the “third teacher”, is filled with equipment and materials specially designed to facilitate a child-led learning and discovery experience.
What is the Reggio Emilia Approach?
The Reggio Emilia Approach began as a parent initiative in the Emilia Romagna province of northern Italy after World War II. With the help of educator Loris Malaguzzi, the town of Reggio Emilia developed the child-led approach. The town has 54 publicly funded schools that specialize in early childhood education (birth to six years of age). These schools are thought to be the best in the world.
Though every community that embraces the Reggio Emilia Approach will look a bit different, there are certain core principles that are universal:
- Children are strong, resilient, capable, whole people.
- Children communicate in 100 languages and must be free to explore each.
- Children develop an understanding of themselves through social interactions.
- Children are inherently curious and driven by their own interests.
- The environment is the “third teacher”.
- Adults act as guides in the learning process, not as the givers of knowledge.
- Educators document work to discuss with everyone in the learning process (other educators, adults, and children).
- Parents are active partners in children’s learning experience.

Please note that we do have a maximum of 2 adults per child.
What is the ratio of children to educators?
We keep class sizes small so we can focus on individualization. Each class has a ratio of between 8 to 10 children per facilitator, depending on the class.
What do I need to bring to the atelier?
An open mind and socks! We never quite know where a child’s exploration may lead them. We recommend bringing an extra pair of clothes just in case things get a bit messy. Don’t forget your child’s personal items. Check out our What to Expect Guide to become more informed.
Do you offer any discounts?
Yes! After full payment of the first child, each subsequent sibling will receive a 20% discount. We have our referral program, and sometimes we offer promotional discounts as well.
